I vehemently disagree. One side delbierately set about fomenting cynicism and pessimism that has undermined faith in the institutions of civil society. They undertook it in response to what they saw as those insititutions being undermined by a definition of civil rights they disagreed with. After 50 years of assault, those institutions were susceptible to usurpation. Some folks may favor having a "father figure" for president (although if Trump is your idea of a father, you have issues), but most are just ineffective at fighting to save those institutions.
